The oil pan is the lower half of the crankcase, also known as the lower crankcase. The function is to seal the crankcase as the shell of the oil storage tank, prevent impurities from entering, collect and store the lubricating oil flowing back from the friction surfaces of the diesel engine, dissipate part of the heat and prevent the oxidation of the lubricating oil.
Most of the cars seen on the market are wet oil panels. The reason why they are named wet oil panels is that the crankshaft crank and connecting rod heads of the engine are immersed in the oil pan once in every rotation cycle of the crankshaft, playing a lubricating role. At the same time, because of the high speed of the crankshaft, every high-speed immersion of the crankshaft in the oil pool will trigger a certain amount of oil spray and mist, which will affect the crankshaft. Lubrication with bearing bushes is called spatter lubrication. If the oil level is too high, the crankshaft crank and connecting rod head can not be immersed in the oil, resulting in the lack of lubrication and smooth crankshaft and connecting rod and bearing bush; if the oil level is too high, it will lead to the whole immersion of bearings, which will increase the rotary resistance of crankshaft, eventually lead to engine performance decline, and lubrication oil is easy. Into the cylinder combustion chamber, resulting in engine oil burning, spark plug carbon deposition and other issues.
This kind of lubrication method has simple structure and does not need another oil tank, but the inclination of the vehicle should not be too large, otherwise it will cause the accident of burning tile and pulling cylinder due to oil breakage and leakage.
Dry oil panels are used in many racing engine. It does not store oil in the oil pan, more accurately, there is no oil pan. These moving friction surfaces of crankcase are lubricated by pressing out oil through measuring holes. Because the dry oil pan engine cancels the function of storing oil in oil pan, the height of crude oil pan is greatly reduced, and the height of engine is also reduced. The advantage of reducing the center of gravity is conducive to manipulation. The main advantage is to avoid all kinds of adverse phenomena caused by intense driving in wet oil pans.
However, because the pressure of lubricating oil all comes from the oil pump. The power of the oil pump is connected by the gear through the rotation of the crankshaft. Although oil pumps are also needed to provide pressure lubrication for camshafts in wet oil-pan engines. But the pressure is very small, and the power of the oil pump is very little. However, in dry oil pan engines, the strength of this pressure lubrication is much greater. Moreover, the size of the oil pump is much larger than that of the oil pump of the wet sump engine. So the oil pump needs more power at this time. Like a mechanically pressurized engine, an oil pump consumes part of the engine's power. Especially at high speed, the engine speed increases, the motion intensity of friction components increases, and the need for lubrication oil is also more, so the need for oil pumps to provide greater pressure, for crankshaft power consumption will intensify.
